Michael Essien is an educational leader with approximately three decades of Public Education experience working in Oakland and San Francisco Unified School Districts. Currently, he is a middle school principal in the greater San Francisco Bay Area. He received his M.Ed. from UC Berkeley's Principal Leadership with a focus on Equity and Social Justice. Michael completed the National Institute of School Leadership Executive Development Program, was a National Equity Project Fellow, and a Stanford Fellow. He believes in Community Schools, Project Based Learning, Restorative Practices, and Strategic Thinking. His accomplishments are in organizational change, transforming professional learning communities, and empowering students, families, and teachers in Public Education.

MICHAEL ESSIEN
Michael Essien is an educational leader with an Equity and Social Justice lens. He received his Masters Degree in Education from UC Berkeley's Principal Leadership Institute and his B.A. in African American Studies from the same institution. His educational experience spans 28 years in Oakland and San Francisco Unified School Districts.
Michael taught Geometry, Algebra 2 & Trigonometry, and Special Education for 21 years in Oakland Public Schools. During his tenure in the classroom, he was a math instructor in UC Berkeley’s M.E.S.A. (Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement) Summer Program for over a decade. Michael left the classroom and became an administrator in San Francisco Unified School District for the last 7 years.
As an administrator, Michael used Community Schooling, Whole-School Approach to Social Emotional Learning, Project Based Learning, Restorative Practices, and Strategic Thinking as strategies to change existing relationships between various members within the organization to interrupt the social reproductive nature of public education.
Michael is an innovator who thinks outside the box. His reallocated resources, realigned existing structures, and redefined professional development to create "Push In" services." The creation of "Push In" services and the use strategies previously mentioned helped transform outcomes for students, families, educators, and community partners in the MLK professional learning community. KQED Mind/Shift, National Education Association (NEA), Learning Policy Institute (LPI), and New Teacher Center (NTC) have recognized the transformative work at MLK Middle School.
In addition to his site leadership, Michael's experiences include: Peer Resources Board Member, Co-Chair of Alignment Bay Area Get Set A-Team of Alameda County Office of Education, 2019-20 Stanford Fellows, 2018-2019 National Equity Project Fellow, Arts Education Master Plan Advisory Committee Member, Significant Disproportionality Committee Member, and completed the National Institute of School Leadership Executive Program.
Michael holds workshops to individual school sites as well as multiple districts to improve the learning environment and outcomes for students, families, and educators. He does individual and group coaching for site leaders and organizations.
